Chairman’s viewpoint 14.09.11
Hello and welcome to the final race meeting of the 2011 season. It has been a quite good season one way and another, spectator numbers are down from the 2010 season, but the racing has been as spectacular as ever.
A major milestone in the club’s history will take place during today’s meeting, when long time officials, Harry & Mary Minty step down from their current duties. Both have been involved with the stock car club in one way or another since that very first race meeting way back in June 1970. Mary retired from her original Secretary’s / Treasurer’s role quite a few years ago but got bored sitting at home, so the club asked her to be the driver licence issuing official, a role she has carried out very efficiently over the many years. Harry has always been in the background of the club, always offering a helping hand if required and was actually doing the most important job of any of the officials at a race meeting, Harry has been keeping all the toilets sparkling clean! The club would like to thank Harry & Mary for all their work for the club over the many years and hope to see them at the racing during the future seasons, spectating only of course.
We have another official stepping down today, Mary Riddell who has worked in the track office and was the official for looking after the end of season trophies and helping out with Hubby Jim when he was club secretary. Mary R has always said that when Mary M stepped down, she would do likewise. Again the club would like to thank Mary R for all the work she has carried out for the club.
Our last race meeting saw all the track championships finally sorted out, with some of them only decided in the final race of the formula. One or two drivers were on the receiving end of punishments due to their race antics on the day, but in general things were not as bad as we had expected. Today being the “Fun Meeting” should see things a bit quieter, apart from maybe the U/L Bangers who are competing for the Steve Mackie trophy. This has been transferred to today’s meeting from the cancelled August 28th meeting. The trophy will go to the highest points scored by a driver over the two U/L Banger races.
The Stoxkarts make their final Crimond appearance of the 2011 season today, expect the usual local drivers. I am not sure if any of the English drivers are making the trip north, but after them lifting all the silverware last time out they might think it is worth the trip north.
The Brisca F2’s are also still competing for track points and they have the W&Y final as their first race. Cars will line up in graded order with the points scored over the previous W&Y heats during the 2011 season. This race is only open to drivers who started the season as a White or Yellow grade driver, you might see drivers with Blue & Red roofs in this race but that is their current grade, they started the season as a White or yellow grade.
Today we have the annual Ladies Brisca Ben Fund race, where the ladies get to race the F2’s and also raises some money for the Ben Fund. Once again the Ben Fund organiser Sharon Blood is making the trip north to present the winning trophies and will be going about with her collecting bucket, so please donate what you can. All money collected goes to help any Brisca F2 driver who is hurt during the racing. Also today she will be selling raffle tickets for a brand new Randall F2 chassis plus some extra’s worth over £2500. Tickets cost £5.00 again with all money going to the Ben fund. Please give her the usual Crimond welcome.
As this is the end of season “Fun meeting” we relax the one driver per car rule for the Crimond only formula’s. This will let a drivers mechanic have a race or someone maybe who wants to by a car have a shootie, but all must have a Crimond licence, either a full or a day licence. If you are having a go, the ladies in the track office will sort you out, it doesn’t hurt!!
Those of you who were here at the last race meeting will be aware of the minute’s silence we held at the start of the final Banger race after the sad news we received during the meeting. Word came through from a Pre-68 Classic Banger event at Hednesford raceway, Birmingham, that a driver had been killed during a race. During one of the meeting heats, he received some damage to his car during the race and had decided to vacate his car, but at this point his car was hit by some fellow competitors which catapulted him out of his car onto the track in front of the other competitors. I will not go into any more details, but it was a shocking incident for anyone to witness. He had been a racer for many years in the Rookie Banger formula and was on his first ever away event in the Bangers, normally only competing at his local tracks in Dorset / Devon being an Auto speed promotion driver. There were some Crimond drivers competing at this meeting, with some of them not racing at all due to the cancelation of the meeting. An investigation has been set up by the HSE, Police and the ORCI and a report will be issued in due course.
Moving on, this season’s AGM is being held on the 13th of November, at the Crimond village hall, start time 1pm. As usual this meeting is open to anyone to have their say, but when it comes to having a vote on a formula, only drivers who have raced at the required amount of meetings can vote. If a driver cannot attend this meeting, they can have a proxy vote and give their vote to another person, but the committee must be informed in writing, “BEFORE” the start of the AGM. There is a section on the Crimond raceway web site forum for drivers to put their thoughts before the AGM, please use this facility as it gives the drivers an idea on what might be brought upon the day.
For the first time ever I think, the AGM is before the Dinner Dance, it was not originally planned that way but due to hotel availability etc., it has worked out that way. After the bad weather we had last year which saw the postponement of the AGM a couple of times, it might be a good thing to have it earlier!! The annual Dinner & Dance is on Saturday November 26th, at a new venue this year, the Station Hotel in Ellon. The committee decided to try a new venue and maybe move the D&D around the country every few years. Rooms are available at the Hotel, but if full there are a few other Hotels in Ellon you can use. Tickets cost £18.00 each and are available from the track shop along with booking the Hotel rooms.
Well that’s about it for another year, I will take this opportunity to thank “ALL” the officials for their hard work during the past year, without them we could not operate and thank all who asked after me after my little health incident in the summer. We are due to start again next season on April the 1st with the practice meeting on March 25th. A full fixture list will be posted on the web site once we have sorted out all the trophy meetings.
last Sunday, the 2nd of October, quite a few Crimond drivers in different formula’s attended Thunder Valley raceway, Lochgelly. Namely Ministox, Saloonstox and Junior Bangers. The action was fast and furious over the meeting with the Ministox using the bumpers quite a lot!!
You might not have heard of Junior Bangers, but they are for drivers of the same age range as the Ministox, 11 to 16. Cars must not be any larger than 1400cc and are built to normal Banger rules. Quite a few tracks have started this formula as it is a lot cheaper to compete in and cars are more readily available. Our own Sean Riddell, (Ministox 029), has been competing now and then at Lochgelly in this formula and has progressed quite well. Last Sunday was the open Scottish for this formula, with a dozen or so cars competing for the title and Sean came home in third place. Well done to Sean, who then went on to have a great battle with some of the local top drivers and won the meeting final. Although our season is finished after today, there are still a few meetings left at Lochgelly with the grand final of the Northern Saloon Championship on November 6th their last meeting, where about half of Crimond will be there to support our Saloonstox drivers.
It is time to go, see you all sometime and enjoy your racing.
